0

City/Town of Residence: Jamestown

Age: 59

Occupation: Front desk at Jamestown Fitness Center, child care, personal trainer

Family: Husband of 24 years; daughter, 22; and son, 20

Your sport or fitness activity:: Working out/lifting weights, obstacle course racing

What is your proudest fitness accomplishment?: It’s a toss-up between my first chin-up and climbing the rope and ringing the bell in a Spartan race.

What motivates you?: Feeling good and being strong

Best local eats: Raisin bread and muffins from the Village Hearth, any fresh local fruits and vegetables, Becky’s BBQ

Famous person you would like to have dinner with:: Theresa Caputo, the Long Island Medium

What’s on your nightstand?: An alarm clock and a fan–the cats knock everything else off!

Favorite cheat meal/snack: I eat whatever I want, but I have given up potato chips.

What do you like to do in your downtime?: Relax on my hammock

Best thing about living in RI: My parents were born and raised in Providence and so was I. RI will always be my home. I like to spend time outside, and there is so much natural beauty here to experience.

One thing people don’t know about you: When I was little, I had an Armadillo phobia! I have no idea why.

Favorite quote: “People will forget what you said
They will forget what you did
But they will never forget how you made them feel.”
– Maya Angelou

Fitness tip for RI Fit Readers: Stop focusing on the number on your scale, and focus on getting stronger instead. It’s all about challenging yourself.

Additional Comments: I have been active all of my life, but for the last 3 years, I have transformed my body and I am in the best shape of my life. I have been participating in obstacle course races for the past 3 years because they are so much fun. I feel like an 8-year-old dragging myself through the mud and flying down a slip ‘n’ slide! My first race was BoldrDash in Yawgoo. Through the boot camps the race director, Lynn Hall, has been putting on, I have made a lot of new friends and have ended up co-leading the boot camps with Lynn. I became a trainer two years ago at the age of 57 and have been teaching classes and boot camps at Jamestown Fitness. Being fit and eating healthily has resulted in a new lifestyle for me. I used to be the queen of junk food. My dad is almost 85, and he has run countless marathons, 3 Ironman triathlons, and works out at a gym 3 times a week. He claims he can do 30 push-ups!
